Hanna Park Sunday 12/20

It's forecast to be a very cold start to the day again on Sunday. That means most people will seek the refuge of the woods. Hanna Park on mountain bikes is the plan. We had about 12 riders turn up this morning for lots of thrills for most and lots of spills for some. Meet up at the front parking lot at 9:00 am.

If there is no rain Saturday the plan is for the traditional Lodge road bike ride.

If we receive the the forecasted rain, Hanna Park's trails should be in good shape on Sunday. Their has been some discussion about a group mountain bike ride at Hanna on Sunday. Hellyer Park Velodrome - San Jose, California

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to ride the Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose, California, with my cousin Ben Burbridge who lives in Berekley. They have “Saturday Mornings Beginner Training Sessions”, where you can rent a track bike for $5 and ride the track for $5. We commented that it was the most fun we’ve had for $10 in a long time. The best part was the instruction. We were taught the rules of the track; the purpose of “the rail”, “the stayers line” and “the sprinters lane”. Once you understand the rules, you have much more confidence on the track. The only goals were 1. don’t get hurt, and 2. don’t embarrass yourself. We did fine on #1, but #2 was debatable.

The track bikes that we rented took a lot to get used to. They were fixed gear, so you had to constantly pedal and could not coast. At the end of a race, they’d yell at us, “keep pedaling, keep pedaling!” They knew our instinct was to coast after the line and that would send us over the handlebars. Also, the bikes had no brakes, which truly added to the nervous factor.

The first part of the session was devoted to the rules and getting acquainted with the track and track bikes. After that, we went through some drills that included sprinting for a short distance against two other riders. Next, we did “Kirin Races”. A “pacer” leads out 6 to 7 racers. They can jockey for position, but can not pass the pacer. At lap 4 ½ the pacer exits the track, and the racers sprint for 1 ½ laps. It’s very exciting and nerve racking at the same time. We competed in several of these races until the end of the morning session.

In a brochure on the park it states “A velodrome was built in 1962 as a training site for cyclists wishing to compete in the 1962 Pan American Games. San Jose had once been considered the bicycling capital of the United States. In the early 1900’s, bicycling was the most popular recreation activity in the valley and enthusiasm has lasted for decades. The existing … velodrome is the fifth in a succession built in San Jose”. Click here to get more information about the Hellyer Park Velodrome.

If you are ever out in the San Jose area, I’d recommend checking out the velodrome. You need to be at the park at 8:30 am and bring your helmet, cycling shoes, pedals, pedal wrench, warm clothing, water, allen wrenches and sunscreen. I’m looking forward to riding the track again in the future.

KONA 2009

We want to say "Good Luck" to those racing in the "big one" this weekend over in Kona, Hawaii for the Ironman World Championship Triathlon. This is a HUGE race with the best in the world facing off for 140.6 miles of combined swimming, biking, and running. The super hot temperatures combined with the wind and hills make this one of the toughest races on the circuit - not to mention that every athlete competing has qualified as one of the top competitors in their age group.

From our area we have Shawn Burke (#849), JC Hanley-Pinto (#1640), Kevin Neal (#654), and Walter Arnold (#369). Coverage will be on-line at http://www.ironman.com/ if you’re interested. Use their race number to track progress throughout the day.

Shawn Burke will also be carrying a prototype GPS and you can track him “live” (updated every 4 minutes) at

The Sunday ride time changed to 8:00 AM.

I had issues with sending group email with Comcast.
That is why you may have not received the last two weeks ride schedule email.
The ride schedule was posted on the Blog.

I have had to split the Lodge Group email distribution list in to two list due to a Comcast distribution limit of 99 names, so that it is not considered spam.

6 Gap Lodging

I’ve got a 2 night reservation (Sept. 25th and 26th) for the Cedar House Inn that I don’t need. I know it can be hard to find lodging for Six Gap so I thought I would see if you knew of anyone who would like to pick up this reservation.

The room is the Chickadee room (http://www.georgiamountaininn.com/chickadee.htm) and the rate is $95-$105 per night.

If someone would like to pick up this reservation, e-mail me at kj@jonesland.net and I will contact the B&B owner’s to let them know you are going to call with your credit card info and switch the reservation.

Thanks,
Ken Jones

Tara Joseph's French Alps Trip

Clients and friends of KONA Human Performance recently visited the French Alps in Haute-Savoie, France, to enjoy a vigorous 10-day cycling vacation. Many of the daily rides, based out of Vanilla Ski Chalet in Bourg-Saint Maurice, included the most difficult 1st Category and Hors Category climbs of the Tour de France, including La Plagne, Cormet De Roselend, Col Du Petite St. Bernard, Col Du Telegraphe and the famed Col Du Galibier, with side trips to La Thuille and Courmayeur, Italy. Our hosts, Sam and Andy Maiklem, (www.vanillaski.com/alpine_etape/) were most gracious. Andy an avid cyclist would ride with us daily giving us the history and translating the french language throughout our day. We would certainly look forward to our evenings, as that's when Andy's wife, Sam would present us with her daily "Extraordinary Culinary Creation". Sam prepares only organic foods; duck, lamb, chicken, lovely green salads and vegetables, to name a few. Local wine and cheese from nearby villages were also enjoyed with our evening meal. I must say, dream of her creations even to this day.

Participants were Leslie Smith, Atlantic Beach; Charlie Fry, Ponte Vedra Beach; Rick Ricart, Palm Bay; Florida; Ben Moore, Jacksonville; and Tara and John Josephs, Jacksonville.
If you are interested in a future trip, please contact Tara Josephs - tarajosephs@mac.com

St. Augustine Cycling Festival

Hi all. Picked up a flyer in my local sandwich shop in town and thought there may be some interest. Seems that the NFBC has teamed up with a few others to put on a Cycling Festival based around St Augustine next weekend, 12/13 Sep. There s a Crit on Sat at the St John County complex, and TT and Road Race at Batram Trail on Sunday. Also a Bike Expo at the St Augustine Amphitheater both days (I was there recently for a performance and it is a hidden gem). Check it all out on www.staugustinecyclingfestival.com

Cheers,
Robert Hudson

Tour of Asturias

Photos from Walter & Lea Anne Campbell's visit with Cesar and Madie Garcia in Candas, Spain.

We met with a small group of locals nearly every morning to ride the rural roads in northern Spain. The local terrain (coastal) consists of rolling hills with a few small climbs. But there are some steep/narrow roads (18-20%) for those that choose to ride them (me). Further inland is mountainous terrain that consists of climbs over 20 kilometers.

My two cents worth

There has been a lot of discussion the past few weeks about the crashes, group safety, etc. We engage in dangerous sport where some incidents can be avoided and others can't. We just need to do the best we can about taking care of each other out on the road. That means being the eyes and ears of the group when riding at the front and always riding in control.

I have been attending the Beaches Tues./Thurs. night ride (county line) for a long time and it has been a slugfest for as long as I can remember. Now our Beaches Saturday ride has developed into a similar style (fast) ride. As a result, we all need to be more diligent about the group ride dynamics and safety. All you young guns need to be a little more patient. Bike handling and pack riding skills take years to develop. Try to watch and learn from the more experienced riders and feel free to ask questions.

I am glad to see such a large number of cyclists showing up for the ride. We all just need to remember that you should never sacrifice safety for speed. Let's be safe out there and have a hard/fast ride.
